SEACON Autumn 2006 - SEACON

Autumn 2006

Editorial

Welcome to the Autumn edition of the SEA CON® Newsletter. It has been an extremely busy period for the SEA CON® Group. As well as a huge increase in work for our standard products we have developed many new connectors and sourced new business working closely with a range of prestigious oil and gas companies. Such new product developments include the Globe-Con connector range. Small in diameter this connector series is manufactured using Viton and is capable of withstanding temperatures of upto 150 degrees fahrenheit. More information on the Globe-Con connector range can be found inside this newsletter. Another development was the manufacture of the new Eexd (European Explosion and Flameproof) underwater mateable, high power connector for Zone 1 (Gas) environments produced for installing onto a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel located off Northern Canada. We have sold several connector pairs for use on this project and are currently seeking ATEX European Certification. In addition to product developments, we have also expanded our production, sales and quality control departments throughout the Group’s locations to keep pace with the increase in business. This considerable investment in personnel and machinery shows the Group’s continued commitment to existing and new customers. Throughout this year, the Group has attended many more exhibitions and have registered increased interest in our connectors and services from initial design stages. We also continue to diversify from our traditional subsea markets into new areas such as rail and military hardware. We hope you will enjoy reading this newsletter and would welcome any comments that you wish to make.

GLOBE-CON

Several new connector developments have taken place this year within the SEA CON® Group. The first of which is the release of the Globe-Con connector range which was developed for a European customer involved in a major offshore development project. Small in diameter this connector series is manufactured using Viton and is capable of withstanding temperatures of upto 150 degrees fahrenheit. Available in three shell sizes with upto 12 contacts and rated to 10,000 psi (22,500 ft/7,000m), this connector range is particularly sturdy and robust. This coupled with it’s high temperature rating makes the Globe-Con suitable for many harsh environment applications.

Bellville

Since the new facility at Bellville opened nearly a year ago, SEACON ® Brantner & Associates, Inc fiber optics division and SEACON Advanced Products, LLC have both successfully relocated to this new 16,000 square foot facility. The Gulf area is home to many major global oil and gas companies and as many more of our products and services are specified by these companies, the move should allow the SEA CON® Group to provide more efficient support to these organizations.

The opening of the Bellville facility last December required a significant reliance on local recruitment, particularly the technicians for the new dedicated fiber optic laboratory. However several key staff from SEA CON® El Cajon’s fiber optic division transferred to the new location whilst others continue to commute in order to assist in the training and certification of new staff as required.

In addition to mainstream production, the fiber optic laboratory at Bellville has a significant amount of experience and capabilities which include;
• Optical Performance – Optical Attenuation, Back Reflection, Cross-Talk, OTDR, Interferometer, Visual Fault Finder, Single Mode, Multi Mode
• Seal Testing – Helium, Nitrogen, Pressure, Vacuum
• Mechanical – Vibration, Mechanical Shock, Misalignment Tests (linear, rotational, angular and radial), Locking Device, Mating Forces, ROV Force, Pull Tests, Bending Tests, Mate/De-Mate Speed Tests, Optical Fiber Pull Tests

New Product Display Vehicle

Due to the increase in our product range, the need for a new product display vehicle became necessary. Used extensively for travelling and visiting our customers across the United States, the new vehicle provides an excellent ‘show case’ for our connectors and molding capabilities and allows our customers to get a ‘hands on’ feel for our products.As we increase our customer base throughout Europe, we have in addition to the traditional exhibitions i.e. Oceanology, OTC and DSEi started to attend and exhibit at other venues. Just recently SEACON (europe) Ltd exhibited at the ONS (Offshore Northern Seas) exhibition in Stavanger, Norway which is home to a number of major oil and gas companies and gave the SEA CON® Group a greater profile to new and existing offshore customers. Over the coming months the SEA CON® Group will also be exhibiting at the MTS Oceans America exhibition which is being held in Boston, Massachussets between 18th to 22nd September and Euronaval in Paris Le Bourget, France from 23rd to 27th October. This will provide us with increased visibility with new and existing clients.

SEA CON® has delivered it’s final shipment of its highly successful and field proved HydraLight connectors to FMC Technologies for the first stage of the Ormen Lange field.
This shipment was the last of over 150 connectors supplied for this project and is continuing testament to the success of the HydraLight connector. Ormen Lange is the largest gas field under development in the Norwegian continental shelf and is located 100km off the northwest coast of Norway at a water depth of upto 1100m. The HydraLight is a multi channel (up to 8 channel) fully underwater mateable, pressure balanced optical connector, qualified to 7000m, with an average single mode insertion loss of less than 0.3dB and a average single mode back reflection of -50dB. It’s proven reliable design is suitable for these harsh operating environments and meets the following specifications;
